 | THE TOUR The bond between Luchino Visconti and Villa Erba will soon be explored in the “Rooms” dedicated to him, open to the public from May by appointment only. Visitors can immerse themselves in the settings and atmospheres so dear to the director, starting out from the main staircase with the grand oil paintings portraying Luigi Erba and Anna Brivio, Luchino’s maternal grandparents, and proceeding from there through the seventeenth century canvases on the walls which bear witness to the chivalrous deeds of the house of Visconti. Then on through the gallery to reach the bedroom of Luchino’s two little sisters Ida and Uberta, the only room left exactly as it was in the days when the young children used to spend their vacations here. In the adjacent rooms the panels begin to document more specific themes: vacations on Lake Como between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries; Luchino Visconti’s childhood in Como; and parallels between scenes from his films and views of Villa Erba. Lastly, in the projection room, a documentary especially made by the National Cinema School offers some evocative historical insights into the life of the celebrated director and his lakeside villa.
